Sire's genes more important than dam's
Research by US scientists indicates that, although mammals inherit equal amounts of genetic mutations from each parent, more of the father's mutations influence the make up of the the offspring than the mother's. The study could have implications both for human health and for horse breeding.

The Brooke receives £50,000 from the Sir Peter O'Sullevan Charitable Trust
The Brooke is an international animal welfare organisation dedicated to improving the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules in some of the world's poorest communities. Sir Peter has been the Patron of The Brooke since 1999 and the latest donation brings the total raised by his Trust to more than £600,000 in 18 years.

Zero-tolerance of steroids in British racing
The British Horseracing Authority introduced new rules on 2nd March stating that no horse should ever be administered an anabolic steroid for as long as it is involved in racing. The policy follows two high profile steroid cases in 2013 and aims to ensure a 'level playing field' for all competitors.

Award for racehorse retraining
Groom, Chantal Wootten, won the Retraining of Racehorses Special Recognition award at the Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards. Chantal retrained Purple Moon (who won more than £1m during his racing career) as a show horse. His showing success includes wins at Hickstead and the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Can supplements help gastric ulcers?
A study carried out at Univeristy of Glasgow compared the effects of SUCCEED (a commercial dietary supplement) and omeprazole (a prescription drug) on gastric ulcers in racehorses. The results showed that the supplement appeared to be as effective as the drug and may therefore have a place in long-term management of ulcers.
