Donkey to run for mayor
A donkey called Marko has been put forward as a mayoral candidate in an election in Varna, Bulgaria. Unlike other candidates Marko 'has a strong character, doesn't steal, doesn't lie, and gets the work done'.

Double bronze for Nick Skelton at Europeans
Having helped to secure team bronze for Britain in the European Showjumping Championships, Nick Skelton went on to win individual bronze riding the 10 year old grey gelding Carlo. He was narrowly beaten by Rolf-Goran Bengtsson (Sweden) and Carsten-Otto Nagel (Germany). Germany took team gold for the 7th time and France took team silver.

Inside the racehorse - Channel 4 programme
As part of their series "Inside Nature's Giants", Channel 4 will be broadcasting an episode on the racehorse on 20th September at 8pm. The programme, which includes a racehorse dissection, will look at the science behind racehorse performance and how their breading makes them vulnerable to injury.

Memorial for US racehorse Invisible Ink
A memorial service will be held for Invisible Ink on 16th September at the Kentucky Horse Park. Although this an honour normally only accorded to champion racehorses his fight back from a life threatening illness at the age of 2 to being runner up in the 2001 Kentucky Derby (at odds of 55-1) earned him his place in the Hall of Champions. He died on 7th September at the age of 13.

Cushings test - money off voucher
A national initiative, "Talk About Cushings", to increase awareness of Cushing's disease is offering a £15 voucher for a blood test to check for the disease. Mainly affecting horses over 15 years old, the most common symptom is a long, curly coat. Their website also gives detailed information on recognising and treating the disease.

Popular showjumper and sire Randi dies
John Whittaker's grey stallion Randi has been put down at the age of 27. He became cast in his box and was too weak to get up. He won £300,000 during his showjumping career.

Racehorse whipping research wins prize
Research carried out at the University of Sydney into whipping racehorses has been awarded the Australian Museum Eureka Prize for it's contribution to animal protection. The research showed that horses do not run faster if whipped, so whipping does not increase the horse's chance of being placed.

Record 6th Burghley for William Fox-Pitt
William Fox-Pitt won the Burghley Horse Trials for a record 6th time. Riding 11 year old thoroughbred Parklane Hawk, he added just 1 showjumping time penalty to his dressage score. This is William's 7th British 4 star win, still 2 less than record holder Mark Todd.
