Burghley win for Jock Paget (NZ)
Jock Paget on Clifton Promise won Burghley depiste having the final showjumping fence down. This follows his Badminton win on the same horse and puts him in contention for the Rolex Grand Slam. New Zealand dominated Burghley, taking 6 of the top 8 places. William Fox-Pitt was best of the Brits in 4th.

Redwings cares for rare hybrid
Redwings charity is at capacity but decided to take on Riley, a hinny, when his owner could no longer afford him. Hinies (female donkey crossed with horse stallion) are rare due to reproduction being less successful when a male has less chromosomes than the female. Mules (mare crossed with donkey stallion) are quite common.

Ben Maher - World Number 1 showjumper
Ben Maher has taken over as world number one in the Longines Rankings from German Christian Ahlmann (who has dropped to 4th). Ben Maher, with mare Cella and stallion Tripple X III, has been instrumental in recent British successes. Beezie Madden (USA) is in 2nd position. Scott Brash has moved up from 25th to 9th.

Study into showjumping whip use
A study at Hartpury College has looked into whether there is a correlation between whip use and performance, and the difference between elite and non-elite riders. It concluded that use of the whip does not increase the chance of a clear round. It also found that non-elite riders tend to use the whip more.

William Fox-Pitt wins GB's only European Medal
William Fox-Pitt, on stallion Chilli Morning, took individual bronze at the Eurpoean Eventing Championships - the only highlight in a disappointing GB performance. The cometition was dominated by Germany who took team gold as well as individual gold and silver. An impressive perofrmance by Sweden gave them team silver.
